How To Create A Link

It is very easy to create links to other pages on this site and also to other pages on other websites. Putting links to other pages on this site of potential relevance or interest to visitors is one of the best ways of allowing this website to be navigated easily. It is also helpful if you put links on other pages and websites to the pages you are creating or editing, to make it easier for people to find your content. You can also email a link to your pages to friends, family and colleagues to make sure that lots of people get to see them.

By linking all pages on a particular subject to every other page or in a chain (on a particular house, a street, a town, or a particular type of house, and so on), you can ensure that visitors interested in a particular subject have the ability to see all the content on that subject very easily.

As well as burying  links in the body of the page, why not create your own sub-menu by listing the relevant links at the bottom of each page (you can copy and paste these links from one page to all the others covering a particular topic)?

Follow these steps to create a link.

  1. To create a link you must have registered with us and be logged in. Press the "Register" button at the bottom of the menu on the right. Once you have registered you will be logged in automatically. Previously-registered users should log in rather than register.
  2. Once logged in, to create a link you must be either creating a new page or editing an existing page (see How to Create a Page or How to Edit a Page for how to do this).
  3. Highlight some text that you wish to be the link or alternatively click on a picture that you wish to be the link, making sure that the highlighted text (if you are creating a text link) explains the content of the page you are linking to.
  4. Click the "Chain" icon in the middle of the second row of the toolbar above.
  5. In the pop up box enter the URL of the page. For a page on this site, this is the page name (this appears at the top of the page you want to link to), remembering to remove any spaces between words. For a page on any other website, enter the URL in the following format: http://www.domainname.com, possibly followed by the page name if you are not linking to the home page of the website (if in doubt, go to the page you want to link to and copy down the exact URL as shown at the top of the window). You can ignore all the other options in the pop up box.
  6. Press "Insert".
  7. The link should be highlighted in red. To test the link, press "Save" and then find and click the link on the page.

To remove a link from a piece of text or a picture, highlight the link text or click on thepicture, then click on the "Break chain" icon next to the "Chain" icon in the toolbar. Remember, you must be editing the page to do this.
